The Williamsport Sanitary Authority (WSA) inspects properties to determine if downspouts are connected to the sanitary sewer collection system in areas that are undergoing sanitary sewer improvement projects. These inspections are part of a program intended to more effectively convey sewage to the Authority’s wastewater treatment plants. By reducing the amount of rainwater and groundwater entering the sanitary collection system, unnecessary treatment costs can be avoided, and the WSA treatment plants will have adequate capacity to treat sewage.
Property owners in areas identified for inspections will receive a letter notifying them of the upcoming inspection. After the inspection, the property owner will be sent a follow-up letter which will identify any actions required. If removal of downspouts is required, the property owner may choose to complete the task or request assistance from the WSA.
